We all know or should know by now, that onion rings are not good for you. They have an unholy amount of fat, too many calories and really how much actual onion do you get out of it?  But for a large and ever growing number of Canadians (over 10oooo so far have joined) even this heart clogger is preferable to our current Prime Minister! The people interviewed for this report agreed that ” Onion ring is not perfect, but at least we know what we are getting” in a clear reference to its humbleness and lack thereof found in our current Prime Minister. While common wisdom would suggest that the only rings Canadians care about are of the Olympic sort, a new hero has emerged in our boring political landscape.

Onion ring affectionately know as “Oni” by those close to it, started its own fan page less than a week ago on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Can-this-Onion-Ring-get-more-fans-than-Stephen-Harper/282298836447) and it has completely and utterly eclipsed the fan page for Stephen Harper, which at last count had nearly 30000 fans.

Because here at Alternavox we so intensely believe in citizen participation and democracy in action, here are the best comments on the fan page so far:

Stephen Harper (no joke!): “OVER 100 thousand for the Onion? Treason!

Michele Sheaf: “Onion Ring: Would you like some fries with that?
Harper: Would you like some LIES with that?”

Marc Bastarache: “Just heard that Stephen Harper is trying to prorogue this page, before it hits 100,000.”

Aaron W. Duncan: “Whats the difference between an onion and Stephen Harper? no one cries when you cut up Stephen Harper. OH SNAP!”

John Hill: “The onion has a certain ring to it, Harper will only ring the Governor General”

Ana Bulia: “This may seem like a dumn question but…. Stephen Harper has fans? really?”

Living Dawn: “Maybe if Harper was deep fried too then he wouldn’t make me cry anymore”

Well as you can see Stephen Colbert would be proud. Do not be surprised if CSIS shows up at your door looking for the “ring leaders”.

Publisher-Creator Mikhail Saavedra began life down by the deepest tip of southern Latin America. He started life with a deep curiosity for all things, with music and books being at the forefront, a curious child by all accounts. As he grew and opened his eyes to the world, he developed a sense of justice and dignity in part as a reaction to growing up in a military dictatorship. Alas, this did not fill him with fear or cynicism but a more rebellious spirit, which led him to being incredibly popular at the principal’s office and the local riot police department…. Then came Canada and it was here that he was able to formulate his deep desire to learn about the world, with Toronto being the kind of multicultural soup that could engage his need to know and embrace. It started with writing, then moved on to what became Toronto’s first Latin Alternative radio show, followed by an all-English show in the same vein. It was this desire to find the true “crossover” among people, which led him to the concept of “Alternavox” He is a lover of wine, good food, Neruda, Eduardo Galeano, rebel music, revolutionaries, dancing, family and beautiful people. Believes that kindness in this much too cynical world is revolutionary, that you are a better person when able to give a little without asking for the change and that on the same token you should laugh at yourself and the madness surrounding you as often as possible as you set out to change the world bit by bit.
