Ok, as your resident music editors and a couple that has been happily married for three years, we had to dig deep for this mix. I know we are lucky and we realize that, but trust me it took a lot of heartache and depression-sessions for us to get here, so we feel ya! I remember what it was like to have someone rip your heart out and have it for breakfast. I remember waiting by the phone for the douche to call and I certainly remember feeling sorry for myself and rolling my eyes when my friends said, “Don’t worry, when it happens, you’ll know!” We’ve all been there and we’ve also been there for the making-up too. When you look in each other’s eyes and for a moment the world stops and everything else is muted, it’s just you and that other person. The birds tweet and you get a “body buzz” just thinking about them. Love is complicated and it comes with its pros and cons. Don’t ever give up and I think Pat Benatar said it best when she sang “Love is a Battefield.”

This takes you to some dark places and then lifts you up with some classic tracks, hip-hop and funk. Whatever you are feeling right now, just remember we’ve all been there.

A Scottish Food Pilgrimage

I absolutely despise airline food. As a statement, that isn’t very original, I know. However, the majority of people will grudgingly accept the form of attempted murder the airlines try to (poorly) pass off as food.  At the end of the day, they’re hungry and the (sometimes) steaming pile of sludge (most reminiscent of ogre shit) in a dish in front of them at least loosely resembles food.

Canada’s Ambiguous Response in Honduras

zelaya

What for CNN seems merely as a “forced succession” provoked by the actions of the deposed president of Honduras Jose Manuel Zelaya. For the rest of the hemisphere and the world it is fairly clear that what we have witnessed is a vile and illegal coup in Honduras, promoted by a military-civilian grouping willing to do anything to stop Honduras from taking a more progressive turn like much of the rest of Latin America.

Matter does not matter
In a world within your head
Silence all that is holding you back
Recreate dreams you thought were dead
A figment of your imagination can become reality
If you just look inside your heart
and believe all that you see

Indie Highlights: Blackburn

Posted by: Mikhail Filed in Boombox 16th July 2009

By Mikhail Saavedra

Tracey Savein :South Paw Productions

Blackburn is without a doubt one of the hardest working bands in Canada and surely remains the go-to guys when it comes to true soulful music. They have been around for the last 15 years, bringing traditional R&B, Soul and Blues music with the inevitable Urban Funk. For those with fond memories, Blackburn entertained audiences for a long time at Toronto’s now mythical “Bamboo”.

As if teenage life isn’t unstable enough, throwing a relationship in the mix can make them all more difficult. I know many people expect that they’ll find their soul mate, their “other half”, and together they will float away on a fluffy cloud until they reach the land of perfection.

Beyond Oprah: How to Find a Book club that’s not about your feelings

When looking for the perfect book club, I was after many of the same things I was looking for in the perfect man - smart, funny, and well-balanced. Yet, finding this mix in a book club has proven much more difficult than finding a date.

Since Oprah took on the cause of books, way back in 1996, book clubs have grown into a cultural institution all by themselves. They have also grown in diversity - from the Jane Austen Book Club (popularized by the book and subsequent movie) to those specializing in cooking books, with accompanying meals. Sizes range from the small (I was once in a book club of two) to the nationwide, such as CBC’s Canada Reads. There seems to be something for everyone, and the trick is to find your perfect match.

When the end of a long relationship comes, it’s like being in a car, and getting into an accident with no seatbelt on. You know you’re screwed, and though you scramble to protect yourself and take cover, you will still end up mangled in a ditch somewhere asking yourself “wha happen?”,and wishing you were dead.

Off-Leash Adventures in Toronto

Posted by: Hannah Filed in Livingvox 16th July 2009

By Meghan Kirschoff-leash-parks-picture

With the advent of summer, many of us dog owners are happy to retire our muklucks and begin the annual search for the perfect dog park.  In this urban jungle, it is increasingly more difficult to find any original jungle at all.  Where the concrete ends, my mission begins with the following criteria: green grass, flowing water deep enough to quench the thirst of our heavy-coated companions on hot summer days, and friendly park companions.
