Fishnet stocking. Colourful striped socks. Retro legwarmers. Bizarre make-up. Stickered helmets. Mismatched shoelaces. Black chipped nails. Studded belts.

This is standard for a rollergirl.

The most fashionable sport in recent history, roller derby is an aggressive, full-contact game where skaters block, hit, and check one another while scoring on roller skates. Roller derby incorporates athleticism and eccentric fashion to create a distinctive tough girl look. Sexy? Yes. Intimidating? Very.

Indie Highlights:HOTCHA

It’s commonplace now to watch on TV the effects of the recession, like for example how many people in the US are actually living in tent cities! Seeing this led me to dust off a copy of some of that older music I keep by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie that had helped so many previous generations cope with the anarchy of our economic system. But I was curious to see if there was anyone talking about this in this day and age and then I found HOTCHA and I was pleasantly blown away. There is that same rascal intensity that I could find in those old records, an intensity derived from singing  something genuine with a mixture of both fun plus a humanistic undertone. I spoke to Beverly Kreller and Howard Druckman who comprise HOTCHA to get a sense of their unique style.

MIDI BISTRO

Cuisine: French Casual
Rating: 4.5

SPECIAL DEAL
Set Lunch: Terrain/Open Sandwich of Choice, Salad and/or fries, coffee or tea $16.95

This cozy little bistro is situated at McCaul and Baldwin, just around the corner from the popular but well hidden strip of foodie paradise. Midi Bistro is a popular lunch spot for the office workers nearby, just steps away from St Patrick Station.

The only waitress in the restaurant was speedy, efficient and lovely. I had arrived late to a work lunch, and my menu was already neatly placed at my seating. The place was packed. She promptly took my drink order, and shortly after, my food order. I decided on the soupe du jour and the Moules Frites – Provençale with a half order of each side, salad and frites, a good balance of healthy-eating and eat-what-I-want.

The Soupe du Jour was a butternut squash soup. It just magically appeared 2 minutes later and was piping hot. The aroma was intoxicating, the texture was perfect, and the sweetness of the squash really came through.

My entrée the Moules Frites – Provençale, which featured shallots, garlic, tomato sauce & provençal herbs was fresh and delightful. The broth was fragrant and welcoming. It was good to the last slurp. The salad was mixed greens with a tasty house vinaigrette. The frites were crispy and light, wasn’t at all greasy, seasoned to perfection, no condiments needed. I could eat them forever!

I completed my light lunch with an espresso and crème brule. The crème brule had good, simple, complimentary favour of vanilla. The sugar had the signature crunch that you want upon meeting the spoon. The texture was rich and creamy but it was cold, I would have preferred it warm or at least room temperature. My co-workers had went with Tarte Tartin, it was a much better choice. The crust was buttery and the apples were caramelized to perfection. It was top with some caramel sauce and a light dusting of confectioner sugar. As for the Chocolate Torte, it was also excellent, a crusty outer layer with plenty warm and gooey chocolaty goodness inside.

Midi Bistro overall is an awesome place for a business lunch. The light lunch was satisfying with out the sluggish after effect that most their neighbouring eateries offers. The service was speedy and courteous. I arrived back to work on time and alert, ready to be productive. The bonus to that awesome meal was that, the big boss footed the bill!

Cheers and good eats ’til next time.

Chilean Pisco Sour

Posted by: Mikhail Filed in Bentobox 17th June 2009

By Mikhail Saavedra

pisco

Pisco is a clear brandy that is popular in both Peru and Chile. The white muscat grapes, from which Pisco is distilled, were first grown in Peru by the Spaniards in the 16th century (at that time what became Peru Chile were both part of Spain’s American empire.) When they became independent countries, both claimed the liquor as their own and it is still a source of discussion even at the international level! Therefore the national drink of both Peru and Chile, is the rich “Pisco Sour.” However there is a difference in sweetness and the citrus used between the two countries’ piscos. Note: Egg whites are used in Chilean pisco sours as well, but for the purist, they might say it is unnecessary adornment, one which I actually like.

Waiting places, artistic spaces

Day Dream moments

Rolly’s Garage

The subtle graduation of irregularly shaped color blocks, pieced meticulously along side each other. Varying tints and shades of pinks, gray’s beiges and browns. Held together to create a whole. These blocks form what was once a nondescript seating area or holding place, a subway car, a set of stairs, and an exterior office block.

Monolithic office towers meandering off the canvas in a tilt that takes the eye so far that you believe for a moment that the canvas is contorting into an odd parallelogram.

This exact and rigid perspective is obviously that of a student of architecture. The spaces he builds on his canvas are pristine. The exact placement of color doesn’t steer off the lines. I would like to see his childhood coloring books, perfect and complete I’m sure. There is such attention to detail. I walk away thinking, lets get him to design our new office block!

Jon Reed is a recent graduate of Architectural studies at the University of Toronto. This body of work was created when he was completing his Masters there.

When I ask Jon what inspires him he immediately mentions his mentor and teacher, Joanne Tod. “She is one of the major influences on my career”

He has worked with her on a few public art projects, proposals, and continues to work with her on new projects.

“These are common urban spaces. Places people can relate to.”

says Reed, “Waiting places. Places where you can retreat into your own thoughts. Places where there are no people. It’s always difficult to put people into your renderings and drawings, so my concentration is on the space.”

When I ask Jon if he will have time to paint once his career takes off he tells me. “I will continue to paint. I have a series of paintings in mind that I have already begun and I will have another show when I get the chance.” His answer is as direct and succinct as his placement of paint on canvas.

These days, the Daniel Libeskind expansion of the Royal Ontario Musem (ROM) probably gets the most press. However, the ROM also used to be home to one of North America’s most famous planetariums. The McLaughlin Planetarium sits with its iconic dome south of the ROM, off University Avenue. Although retired from its planetarium duties since 1995, it remains an important part of Toronto’s scientific past.
