The theme of this month’s issue is the city and as a city girl, I like many others often find myself traveling about Toronto using public transportation. While heading to work on the subway in the morning I see a lot of things…some make me laugh and others just confuse me. Something that I’ve noticed a lot of lately is women applying their makeup while riding the subway. Believe me, I understand what it’s like to be running late and just not have enough time to pull myself together before heading out the door, but this occurrence captures my attention for several reasons.

While modern society has been conditioned to accept obvious signs of female vanity (makeup, manicures, dyed hair and such), it is only recently becoming more accepting of men who clearly take pains with their appearance. The word ‘metrosexual’ has become part of our lexicon, used to describe a man who may be gay or may be straight but either way embraces the aesthetic of exfoliators and pedicures and hundred dollar moisturizer.

Do judge this book by its cover! The content is as deliciously enticing as the visual on the front. This is a must- read for any foodie—especially if meat is your vice; if you eat, sleep and dream about meat like I do, you won’t be able to put this book down.

Toronto’s premier LGBT Film and Video Festival’s 19th features this time around over 200 films and videos from over 30 countries. Among all the parties, receptions and panel discussions there is a myriad of different perspectives and points of view. It will draw over 32,000 people to screenings and there is a very strong Canadian contingent this year.
Among the buzz worthy highlights Patrik, Age 1.5 by Ella Lemhagen, in essence a family drama that deftly blends both drama and humor and a twist; Baby Love (Comme les autres) by Vincent Garenq was an incredible hit in its native France, and deal s with adoption. If you have not caught on just yet this year’s festival is quite focuses on gay families, likely a good idea considering events south of the border.
There is also a strong contingent of women with Canada’s The Baby Formula by Alison Reid about two lesbians wanting a kid, but their own biological one with yet another twist; Benni Has 2 Mothers by Vivid Tjipura, it’s a South African movie that deals with the ins and outs of South Africa’s seemingly advanced social policy.
If you add to this a big focus on France, there are films for everyone’s taste!

My love for Toronto grew at a slow but steady pace. Like many others, I arrived here in the prime of my youth with a diploma in my hand, a hundred bucks in my pocket, and expectations of making it big. As a Maritimer, I was looking forward to finding success, independence, experiencing new things, and blending into the multicultural and diverse crowd.

High School has been a huge life lesson for me. I’ve had ups and downs that have left me feeling overwhelmed and out of tune.

This is a true story, but the narrator has asked that his identity be protected to prevent lawsuits.
Seventeen years ago, sometime circa 1992, before Cobain died, right around age 13, my father had the brilliant idea of buying me, Mike, and Joe each Canadian Tire brand slingshots for a camping trip.

Amongst the earliest known photographs of Toronto are a series of panoramas taken by Armstrong, Beere and Hime in 1856 atop the Rossin House Hotel. Taken from all angles, the series of photographs was submitted to Queen Victoria in the competition to become Canada’s capitol city.

Toronto based power-duo ‘The Books Elusive’ have a great sound, killer songs, and plans to keep em’ coming! Members Damon De Szegheo and Lynne Dubec sat down to answer a ‘six-pack’ of questions for Alternavox. Sorry Avoxers, but this is required reading and this first chapter will be on the test.

Ever look at the past and try and pinpoint exactly where you went wrong? For some folks, it is one clearly defined moment in time that signaled the beginning of the end of the moral fiber. For others, it is a clusterf**k of circumstances paired with impulsivity that triggers the growth of a “bad seed”.
