Alternavox is always looking for innovative social technologies to connect with our current readers and future ones. Alternavox is looking to engage you, our readers, in a social experiment. We are harnessing the power of human connection and relationships to see how many hits we can sustain on our site.
With the support of another fellow Canadian company that believes in sustainable, ethical, and environmental standards, LUSH has provided Alternavox subscribers a promotional treat!
Participate in our ‘Word of Mouth’ campaign and Alternavox readers will have an opportunity to win a gift box full of goodies from LUSH.
So for Valentines Day I decided to pick myself up this box for a little sweet relaxation and oh so romantic fun. This box is full of decadent treats that will satisfy any sweet toothed chocoholic. I found out that this is a limited edition gift set full of designer yummy bath goodies and the fashionista and snob in me just could not resist anything with the word ‘limited’ and ‘edition’ in it. It was a great price for all the yummies that you get with it. Inside was LUSH’s best selling aphrodisiac Sex bomb that fizzles all over your body in the bath and a nice Sultana soap that all I can describe as reminding me of Sultana crackers that I use to have when I was a kid as it has that sweet and fruity smell to it.

The attack on Tamil people got a 'thumbs down' from the international community
Like many other nations, the island now called Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon until 1972) is a fabrication of British Imperialism. At the time that Britain ‘conquered’ the island, there were two nations distinct from each other in language, religion, and culture. By most accounts they kept out of each other’s territories but co-existed. Neither their history nor their opinions were taken into consideration when the two nations, the Sinhalese and Tamils were forced into a union by the British to make their administration of the island more convenient.
As any good meatitarian will tell you, there’s almost nothing as unappealing as the thought of an entire meal without a single piece of meat. So when my girlfriends and I decided that our next foodie destination would be Live Food Bar (vegan), my initial reaction was one of mild skepticism, mixed with a healthy dose of optimism… unfortunately the optimism only lasted about two minutes into my conversation with a vegetarian friend, who had already tried (and loved) the food:
“Okay, so…no meat. But if I don’t like it, I can just get something with cheese, right?” (I’m a firm believer that cheese will right any wrongs in any food-related situation)
“Hannah, it’s a VEGAN restaurant. No meat, no cheese, no anything having to do with animals”

Mass organizing and mobilizing are the order of the day in the Bolivarian Republic
10 years ago, Venezuela was a country struggling with neoliberal policies that had impoverished 75% of people and held 22% under extreme poverty. To run for elections in 1998, Hugo Chavez formed MVR (Movement Vth Republic), a party based on a set of principles and guidelines known as Bolivarianism (inspired by Simon Bolivar, XIXth century liberator of 5 South American nations and Panama). MVR was the continuation of what had been a clandestine movement since 1983, aiming at developing true patriotic sentiment within the Armed Forces.
After a failed coup in 1992, Chavez remained in the memory of the people for his brave public acceptance of the failure of the military uprising and taking personal responsibility for it. The young rebel spent a couple of years imprisoned in Yare, and then another couple years secretly travelling around the country trying to understand peoples’ needs. Patience and hard work paid off and after announcing his intention to participate in the country’s democratic life, Chavez was elected President of the Republic. His party MVR leading the way into a National Constitutional Assembly that officially marked the beginning of a new republic.

Minister Jim Flaherty presents his ‘common sense’ solution for capitalism
For centuries, the imperialist countries of the world facilitated the first phases of capital accumulation and industrialization, through the ever-increasing exploitation and plunder of the “Third World”. Since the 1970s, a deeper exploitation of workers in the imperialist countries has been necessitated to maintain capitalism – the period we have come to know as “neoliberalism”. And now, with the greatest economic crisis since the 1930s, monopoly capitalism is confronted with the necessity of fashioning new parasitic methods to carry on with the process of capital accumulation. As trillions of dollars in fictitious wealth has disappeared in recent months and the poles of financial power are shifting, radically new measures are being taken to sustain and stabilize monopoly capitalism.

Southern Tagalog workers protest political persecution
The Canadian media has reported on the massive increase of Filipino migrant workers into Canada. The human rights situation in that country reveals the underlying reasons why so many are looking to leave.
On February 5, Atty. Remigio Saladero Jr., the chief counsel of Kilusang Mayo Uno [KMU (May First Movement)] — the progressive alliance of trade unions in the Philippines — and member of Pro Labor Assistance Center (PLACE), Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) and the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) was released from prison. He was joined by five leaders from popular organizations in the Southern Tagalog region east and south of Manila. All six had been detained for three months.

Demonstrations in London against Israel's attacks on Gaza
The incessant sound of typing over the many laptops around me became the background theme sound of my life over recent weeks . Since Israel’s latest assault on Gaza that began on December 27, my social circle of journalists and activists and I have besieged ourselves (no pun intended) in a friend’s basement to write articles, coordinate with other groups, take interviews, and discuss strategies for raising awareness and taking action.
I first tried out hibiscus tea at a health club in Cancun Mexico and dearly loved the flavour. Once I discovered about the health benefits, I became r...
Publisher-Creator Mikhail Saavedra began life down by the deepest tip of southern Latin America. He started life with a deep curiosity for all things, with music and books being at the forefront, a curious child by all accounts. As he grew and opened his eyes to the world, he developed a sense of justice and dignity in part as a reaction to growing up in a military dictatorship. Alas, this did not fill him with fear or cynicism but a more rebellious spirit, which led him to being incredibly popular at the principal’s office and the local riot police department….
Then came Canada and it was here that he was able to formulate his deep desire to learn about the world, with Toronto being the kind of multicultural soup that could engage his need to know and embrace. It started with writing, then moved on to what became Toronto’s first Latin Alternative radio show, followed by an all-English show in the same vein. It was this desire to find the true “crossover” among people, which led him to the concept of “Alternavox”
He is a lover of wine, good food, Neruda, Eduardo Galeano, rebel music, revolutionaries, dancing, family and beautiful people. Believes that kindness in this much too cynical world is revolutionary, that you are a better person when able to give a little without asking for the change and that on the same token you should laugh at yourself and the madness surrounding you as often as possible as you set out to change the world bit by bit.
