hope-storyIt is 7 p.m. on a Friday night. It is raining and foggy. Three women are standing inside a bus shelter at a Yonge and Steeles bus stop. On the far left side of the bus shelter a young woman is holding a binder in her arms as she leans against the glass wall. She is looking down at the pavement, deep in her thoughts. She has been thinking about last night all day long. A part of her is trying to focus on the good times that they had together, pretending that last night never happened.

Re-Thinking Economics

bailout11(A great article to remind us of the pre Obama period and the current state of the economy.Editor)

By Nicolas C. Petraglia

After seeing that the bail out bill finally passed on October 3rd, I could not help but remember an article published that same week on the CNN website which read,

“In the span of just 11 days, the Bush administration and lawmakers, seeing ominous warnings in the credit markets, rushed to create legislation to prevent a potential economic meltdown. The result: A $700 billion bailout package that aims to get financial institutions lending again by letting the U.S. Treasury buy up their troubled assets, most of which are tied to the housing market crash.”[1]

Think Inside the Vox

Posted by: Mikhail Filed in Bulletinbox 26th January 2009

2386516257502704dd05bzc3Alternavox is a news, arts and culture project that we have created with the focus being the human experience in its immense diversity. It has long been a dream of ours, it is the “alternative voice” a collection of voices from every background, demography and lifestyle that represents the human race. An online entity with a mission to educate, enrich and elate people’s minds while promoting social justice in its heart.

It seems like winter is the perfect time to launch officially our new site, the leaves of fall are gone, and the rebirth of spring is on the horizon. Winter is a time where people turn inward both physically and mentally. That means we will have your undivided attention, lucky us, and we can share with you something special and something different.

We are Toronto-based for starters, but globally minded. The thing we can be most proud of in our city is our diversity and our commitment to embrace that quality, so Toronto is really the best opening point in our master plan. That plan is to know no geographic boundaries, a true internationalist dream; and to take Alternavox to every city, port, town and village on the map. Even if we cannot physically take you there, the new online world and technology that has become such a big part of our lives can make this happen for us all.

The human voice is what we talk, sing, laugh, cry, scream and love with. We hope to take you through all those emotions as we embark on this journey together. As the wonderful writer, Eduardo Galeano tells us “The air shall be cleansed of all poisons except those born of human fears and human passions” We embrace this as a goal.

Join us as the idea that started modestly with a radio show that aimed to break barriers moves on to its second birth.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.” - Maya Angelou

Up with Dead People

ottowindowFor those who are unfamiliar with the work of the writer/director Bruce LaBruce, a basic description of his genre would be “gay political porn which metaphorically exams social issues by means of explicit scenes of gay male intercourse”, though even that is still a label far too general for his work. Common themes also include the relationship between sex and violence, and the rejection of queer stereotypes (or sometimes the rejection of rejection). In the case of Otto, LaBruce toned down the explicit sexual content in favour of characterization, themes, and politics.

fable2

If you are a fan of Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters you’re going to love the newest game being produced by Lionhead Studios. Fable Two is an authentic action-RPG (role-playing-game) coming out for X-Box 360. The creator, Peter Molyneux, designed this game hoping that beginners can button mash while at the same time hard-core players can still find the game an intense experience.

Sympathy for the Devil

riaa2As the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) continues its fairly successful litigious rampage against music downloaders, a backlash is brewing. The RIAA’s aggressive lobbying on the intellectual property front and the coercive legal tactics they use to bully file sharing service providers and their members have inspired a growing coalition of activists, lawyers, and universities. But this article isn’t about that. In the true spirit of “know thy enemy”, I’d like to explore what motivates the RIAA to be so evil.   The RIAA is a trade association that represents the interests of major American music labels.  According to their official website, RIAA members are the record labels and distributors who “create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States”.  Until the late 1990’s, this meant that if you wanted to distribute or buy music, you had to go through the RIAA.

Tales to Astonish are a band from Toronto with Dan who sings lead vocals and plays bass, Stew who sings backup vocals and plays guitar, Phil who also sings backup vocals and plays the keyboard, and Shaun who is on drums. They played at the Horseshoe Tavern on December 9, 2008 as part of the 102.1 rock night. I got a chance to sit down with them and ask them a few questions.

The Graphic Novel as a Form of Literature

Posted by: Mikhail Filed in Writersbox 24th January 2009

nufonia

To some, this will be an old argument that has been belabored, fought, and won many times over. For others, this will be a new and unfamiliar tale - graphic novels are starting to become considered a mainstay of contemporary literature. For the uninitiated and unfamiliar, a graphic novel is a full-length story, drawn and texted - typically in panels - and typically expressing a single continuous self-contained story. In other words; it’s a non-serial comic book. A comic book; but also a novel. Some of them are hundreds of pages long, or thousands in the case of some of Osamu Tezuka’s stories, or are so massive they’re broken into parts to make a series (not unlike Dune or Lord of the Rings). These are not dime-rack drugstore comics - these are not tales of underwear perverts who cannot be recognized because of a lack of glasses or the addition of a bit of makeup - the topics which these cover are widely varied in content, meaning, style, and narrative.

In an interesting mix of events, The Beguiling in Mirvish Village was hosting a booksigning by webcomic artist/writer Chris Onstad on Tuesday, November the 4th during the USA Federal election. The booksigning was held next door at The Central - a regular meeting venue for Beguiling events - and was part meet and greet, part political throw down.
